Fire extinguisher check versus periodic test: what is the difference?
VBoth in the regulation and in everyday speech, two terms appear that are easily confused: kontrola provozuschopnosti and periodic inspection. They are not synonyms. They differ in frequency, scope and, in practice, also in the level of effort required.
Operational check: once a year
Operationality checks are the regular, shorter inspections mandated by Decree No. 246/2001 Coll. On fire prevention to be carried out at least once a year. In addition to the annual interval, they are also performed exceptionally, always after using the device, if there is doubt about its functionality, or following mechanical damage. The first check must take place no later than one year after the device's installation.
We describe this in detail, including who is authorised to carry out the inspection and how it is verified, in our article. Inspection of fire extinguishers: deadlines, procedure and who is authorised to carry them out .
Periodic inspection: once every 3 or 5 years
A periodic test is a more demanding procedure that also includes a hydraulic pressure test of the fire extinguisher vessel. The interval varies depending on the type of filling:
- § water and foam appliances - periodic inspection once every 3 years,
- § other types (powdered, snow with CO₂) - periodic test once every 5 years.
A pressure test verifies whether the appliance's vessel can still withstand the internal pressure after years of operation without risk of rupture. This is therefore an inspection of the vessel itself, not just what is visible from the outside.
In practice, this usually means the unit must be drained from the vessel and dismantled, the vessel tested separately, and the unit refilled and reassembled. This is therefore an intervention that takes more time than an annual inspection and is typically carried out off-site at the inspection company's service facility.
Why is this tested only after several years and not right from the start? The fire extinguisher vessel is a pressure container that throughout its operation is exposed to the pressure of its contents, temperature fluctuations and normal wear and tear. Even if the device is never used, the material ages, which is why at regular intervals it is verified that the vessel continues to reliably hold pressure, not only when it needs to be used.
Are you unsure when your unit is due for its periodic inspection? Ask a technician to verify this on site.
Request an inspection technicianWhat both inspections have in common
Only a professionally competent person authorised by the equipment manufacturer may carry out operational checks and periodic tests. After both tasks, operational capability is proven in the same way, with a check certificate, a control label on the unit and a seal on the service valve. The difference lies in what the technician actually does during the visit and how often they return to the given unit.
Put simply: the operational check answers the question "is the device currently in good working order and usable?", whereas the periodic test answers the question "will the vessel itself safely withstand the pressure of its contents for another few years?". Both questions are equally important for the actual functionality of the device; they just ask about different things and therefore have different frequencies.
When the dates for both inspections coincide
With an appliance that has been in operation for several years, the annual inspection and the periodic test may fall within the same period. In such cases, technicians usually combine both inspections into a single visit. You therefore do not need to book service twice if both dates are close together. It is therefore advisable to note the date of the last inspection and the last periodic test for each appliance, so it is clear what exactly is currently required.
Why knowing the difference matters
If you are scheduling an appointment with a certified inspector, it is useful to know whether the unit only requires an annual check or if its periodical inspection deadline has already expired, as both the duration and scope of work on site differ. For older units or those not currently registered, the simplest solution is to have both checks verified at once during a single technician visit. This is particularly beneficial for properties with multiple units, typically in. SVJs and apartment buildings , where it is advantageous to have a single supplier for the entire building and one overview of dates. Indicative prices for both services can be found in the article. One-page summary
An operational check is a brief annual inspection. A periodic test is a more demanding procedure including a pressure vessel test, carried out every 3 years for water and foam appliances and every 5 years for other types. Both must be performed only by a professionally competent person, and after both, operational capability is proven in the same way, with a certificate, a label and a seal. The due date for each appliance is most easily determined from the date on the current label or from the last inspection certificate.
